Our Philosophy

Respecting the Tradition

At Tria Prima we foster creativity but respect tradition. We use age old techniques developed by previous masters, honed by local ingredients and an arid environment to create a unique Spirit of Life which reflects our values of quality and transparency.


Our focus is on the best quality single malt whisky possible. In order to achieve this, we operate at a rate conducive to the production of a complex and well-balanced whisky.

We use only premium ingredients, including South Australian barley, to delicately guide and extract the hidden spirit using traditional processes, followed by maturation in top quality casks.


This means that our product is limited. It is said that only the wise choose quality over price; we trust you agree, and hope you enjoy contemplating and savouring this as much as we have enjoyed creating it.

Our Team

Head Distiller : Paul Shand

Tria Prima is a small family business run by Paul and Trang Shand. Our whisky maker Paul was formerly a geochemist, using chemistry as a tool to understand the evolution of the earth and its natural waters.
Whilst exploring for gold in the Scottish Highlands, he also discovered liquid gold in the local bars and studied both during quiet evenings of scientific contemplation.
The same rigour is now applied to making whisky, building on the shoulders of the ancient alchemists and modern sages, but maintaining an emphasis on quality ingredients using hand crafted techniques.

Our boutique nano-distillery is located in Mount Barker in the picturesque Adelaide Hills approximately 4 km from Mount Barker Summit.
